Por qué los detractores de ESG se sentirán decepcionados a partir de ahora

Después de años de pleno apogeo del ESG, la inversión sostenible ha sido muy debatida durante el 2022. Esto fue así en gran parte por las posturas políticas en los Estados Unidos, donde las diferencias entre los "estados rojos" anti-ESG y los "estados azules" pro-ESG se ampliaron significativamente. Aun así resulta poco probable que la incertidumbre derivada del campo anti-ESG disminuya en el próximo año, sobre todo a medida que nos acercamos a las elecciones presidenciales estadounidenses de 2024.

La dinámica del mercado también contribuyó al enfoque ESG, ya que los sectores que tradicionalmente no estaban alineados con la sostenibilidad, como el petróleo y el gas, vieron fuertes ganancias como resultado de la invasión rusa de Ucrania. Esto pudo haber tentado a algunos inversores a dejar de defender los objetivos de sostenibilidad a largo plazo, en un intento por capturar ganancias a corto plazo.

Sin embargo, confiamos más que nunca en las perspectivas a largo plazo para la inversión sostenible, y no creemos que los titulares negativos reflejen la realidad de la situación, al menos fuera de los EE.UU.

En la actualidad, la integración de la sostenibilidad en las decisiones de inversión se está convirtiendo cada vez más en una corriente general a nivel mundial, impulsada tanto por la actividad regulatoria como por las preocupaciones del mundo real. De hecho, una investigación realizada por Dow Jones en septiembre de 2022 mostró que se espera que la inversión ESG se duplique en los próximos tres años, mientras que el 66% de los líderes financieros nombraron a la temática de inversión ESG como el principal impulsor para un crecimiento sostenido a largo plazo.

Los múltiples impulsores a largo plazo

Ciertamente, la oleada regulatoria ESG no se relajará en el corto plazo. A nivel mundial, un número creciente de jurisdicciones están introduciendo reglas y taxonomías que rigen la inversión ESG y las divulgaciones de empresas, como el Reino Unido, EE.UU. y Singapur. A menudo se basan en las directivas existentes de la UE, como el SFDR, la taxonomía verde de la UE y el CSRD.

Se espera que las iniciativas regulatorias en curso aumenten el interés de los inversores a la hora de tener en cuenta las consideraciones ESG, ya sea indirectamente o –como en el caso del reglamento MiFID de la UE el año pasado– ordenando directamente que las preferencias de sostenibilidad se tengan en cuenta como parte de una sesión de asesoramiento sobre inversiones.

En el nivel más alto, aunque la Cumbre del Clima de COP27 no fue universalmente considerada como un éxito, se acordó el Marco Mundial de Biodiversidad Kunming-Montreal, que probablemente inspirará nuevos proyectos legislativos en los próximos años. Ya se han promulgado una serie de importantes regulaciones de sostenibilidad, como la nueva ley de la UE sobre productos libres de deforestación, que también exige salvaguardias sobre los derechos humanos, y la Ley de Prevención del Trabajo Forzado de Uigur en los Estados Unidos.

Con temas tan apremiantes como el clima, la biodiversidad y los derechos humanos encima de la mesa, las empresas que no puedan estar a la altura del creciente nivel de cumplimentación requerida serán cada vez excluidas de los mercados más grandes del mundo. Si un análisis ESG exhaustivo seguirá condición imperativa, los inversores podrán enfrentar riesgos en aquellas que no se adapten con celeridad.  

E incluso sin estos impulsos por parte de la regulación, el poder de la opinión pública no debe ser subestimado. A medida que nos enfrentamos cada vez más a visiones de fenómenos meteorológicos extremos y una gran pérdida de biodiversidad, es probable que los inversores minoristas se vuelvan más conscientes de la conexión entre sus inversiones y los factores de sostenibilidad. En cuanto a los inversores institucionales, aunque hubo algunos casos de retroceso en términos de compromisos climáticos, estos se vieron eclipsados por el amplio número de entidades que buscan fortalecer las promesas de sostenibilidad.

Las etiquetas no son transcendentales...

A medida que avanza el 2023, la discusión en torno al término "ESG" seguirá estando en el punto de mira, particularmente con su continua politización en los Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, sin un consenso sobre una metodología alternativa a la actual clasificación global de los productos ESG, no esperamos ver ningún cambio a corto plazo en el actual statu quo.

En cualquier caso, independientemente de la terminología que nos unamos en algún momento, el aumento de la sostenibilidad de los inversores no solo ha llegado para quedarse, sino que también se verá acelerado.
